Call for Artists

The Frontier Montana Gathering of Artists 2000

The Frontier Montana Gathering of Artists was founded in 1998, and is one of the more innovative art-in-the-parks programs
underway in the National Park Service. The Gathering is held during the week of August 25, the founding anniversary of the
National Park Service (1916) and Grant-Kohrs Ranch NHS (1972). This year the Gathering is schedule for August 22, 23,
24, 25, (Tuesday through Friday). The concept was proposed and pursued in 1998 by this site’s first artist-in-residence,
watercolorist Bob Barkell, who works closely with the site’s chief of interpretation to make it happen. The Gathering is an
invitational event attracting the finest established and up-and-coming fine arts professionals. Its purpose is four-fold:

To celebrate and sustain the traditional collaboration between the arts and the national parks;

To artistically capture the West’s ranching heritage represented by the matchless landscape, features, and architecture of
Grant-Kohrs Ranch;

To provide a forum for artists to interact with and learn from each other;

To provide opportunity for public appreciation of the fine arts and Grant-Kohrs Ranch through the exhibition of
artwork produced by Gathering Artists.

This year we have expanded the Gathering to include 40 artists, in 1999 we invited 25 artists. This means that we have room
to invite at least 15 additional artists from around the country. Would you like to apply to be one of those artists invited to
attend?
