3 Derelict Vehicles, 2 Days, 1 Kevin Dresser
Street-turned-studio painter Kevin Dresser heads back outdoors to pay homage to the urban backdrop that nurtured his early artistic upbringing. 3-2-1 is our intimate contact with one artist's transformations, fusions, and struggles with established art forms and accepted audiences. When he first moved from rural New Hampshire to New York City in 1991, Kevin was originally drawn to those backdrops shared by the graffiti community. As his style developed from an expression of personal identity on the streets to that of an abstract expressionism in the studio, Kevin's canvases of decomposing found objects and rusting scrap metal clearly and defiantly show that his backbone will always be the modern-day city in all its glory and detritus. The short film 3-2-1, which fuses footage of the artist covertly applying his dripping patterns on abandoned vehicles with the music of Eric Dolphy, recalls jazz-era action painting and a malleable, evolving street art form for tomorrow. Forsaking aerosol cans and building walls for brushes and abandoned cars, Kevin offers his own countdown: 3-2-1 paints the portrait of a painter painting a portrait of a new breed of street artist.
